Father John Bevins, a
retired Naval Chaplain, was appointed to take the helm of the
Immaculate as her Pastor in June of 1991.
He started twenty-four hour
Eucharistic Adoration, feeding the homeless every morning, bought back
music to the Immaculate with the choir, workshops for adult education,
and many other
accomplishments.
The church renovation project was a success with the
collection of over 1.2 million dollars in under six weeks.
The Church
of the Immaculate was named a Minor
Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI on February 9th, 2008, an honor made
possible by Henry Mansell, Archbishop of the
Archdiocese of
Hartford with the help of Sister Mary Kathleen Ronan, a member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Mich. and the
liturgical consultant for the Archdiocese of Hartford.
It became official
in the Archdiocese of Hartford, Sunday, August 10th 2008, at the 12:30 PM
Mass at the Immaculate with the reading of
the basilica proclamation by Fr. John Bevins in the presents of Archbishop Henry Mansell at which time our
Pastor, Fr. John J. Bevins,
then received the title of The Very Reverend John J. Bevins, Rector of the Basilica of the
Immaculate Conception, Waterbury, Connecticut.
