A Message from the Fr. Ford
Regarding Revised Mass Schedule
We will be adjusting our Mass schedule this week, beginning on Ash Wednesday. Our Sunday Mass Schedule will consist of a Saturday vigil at 5:00 p.m. in English and a second vigil at 6:30 p.m. in Spanish. On Sunday our Masses will be at 6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. in English, as well as 6:00 p.m. in the Extraordinary Form.
Part of the schedule change is moving the Saturday Vigil from 4:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This was decided upon to better meet the needs of our parish. Being a parish community that is so active, and particularly due to our large volume of weddings, a later Vigil Mass will allow for these very important sacramental events to be celebrated with due attentiveness instead of being fit into an already tightly packed Saturday schedule. The most pressing reason to change the Sunday Mass times is that we need adequate time to offer religious education for our students. Currently the religious education program only consists of 30 minutes a week at most, and does not meet the diocesan regulations or the reality of the time needed to adequately teach the faith. In our new schedule, religious education for Grades K-7 will be held from 9:00-10:00 a.m. every week. Eighth Grade Confirmation and RCIA will meet from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Also, on Sundays we will begin hearing confessions between the four morning Masses. This addition aims to provide confessions at the time when the majority of parishioners are present in the Basilica. Finally, in order to continue to build our parish sense of community we will be hosting “coffee and” between the main Sunday Masses. “Coffee and” will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., in the McGivney Building. This will help our parishioners to get to know each other better and have a spot to enjoy each other’s company after Mass.
We are also adjusting our weekday schedule. Masses will be held at 6:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m., 12:10 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 6:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., and 12:10 p.m. on Saturday. Confessions schedule will be 6:30-7:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and 5:00-5:25 p.m. every day Monday-Friday. Confessions on Saturday will be heard from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
These changes were necessitated by the loss of one full time priest in Father Connell as well as Fr. Casey’s part time assignment to Sacred Heart High School where he will be responsible for pro- viding a daily Mass and regular confessions for the students. Further, we are moving the 4:15 weekday Mass back in recognition of the fact that many people who work during the day are not able to make it to Mass by 4:15, thus the change to 5:30 p.m. Finally we want to have a period of confessions corollary to every Mass to allow of greater access to this very important Sacrament.
All of the schedule changes will be effective on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016. As time goes on, we will examine how the new schedule is working out and what further adjustments need to be made to best accommodate our parishioners (i.e. scheduling an earlier Sunday Mass during the summer months or a later evening Sunday Mass in English, should there be enough interest). In this regard, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
